'Bed Time' Stories

October 08, 2009

Troubled times giving sleepless nights are ok.

Of-late, i've been having this sleep-less-ness at nights,  even in the brightest of situations, and this made me reflect on my past.....,

As a child,
I was at home, perhaps the best time i had in relation to bedtime.
Or, may be that those memories are no longer present in my head!
Only thing i remember is, my mom used to say to me and my brother at the bed time "C'mon lets see who sleeps first."
Although that was the dumbest competition i've ever been into,I didn't realize it till i got into my teenage.
Or if bugged up my dad to tell a story for me, he used to start like "loooooooooooooooooooooong ago…..",
and as expected i would be fast asleep by the time he came to present tense.

I was at  hostel from my 9th year (5th grade) onwards,
"Worst days ever" in relation to my bed time.
We had this study sessions post dinner when i was at hostel,
from 8:45pm-9:30 - its called night study, to clear out any confusions with other study hours we had in the morning(6:00-7:30am) and in the evening (6:00-8:00pm).Someone's there to monitor our study sessions, to make sure that we are studying and not sleeping or reading comics, Usually it's one of our sir's at hostel or the hostel leader, And i was a regular for them. I would be sleeping for sure, they'd get a chance to refresh their wrist knuckles with a knock on my head and make me stand up for 20 ins, so that i don't sleep.I remember those morning jogging sessions, which we were having after we are woken up at 5:30qm and made to jog like 500m and then exercise for a while, which i of-course hated a lot!I was a voracious sleeper back then!
A big U turn when i got to my 10th grade and i was elected hostel leader.
Good days are back!!
I was picking up on the guys who were sleeping in the study time and had a lot of fun! I was vengeful for those painful 5 years and spared no one sleeping when i kept watch!

Come to 11th and 12th grades(intermediate study), as just every other student in my state(both the -state in country and -mental state of being) i was made to study like 16-17 hours per day, which resulted in a pair of glasses for proper vision and not with an admit in any of premier engineering college - as expected.
Not much of bed-time stories during this time.It was all tragedy, not an iota of fun in 'em.

Nights during engineering days, were just the opposite, pure fun!
Nights during those days were like,
  • where to eat -now,tomorrow?,
  • what to do now? - movies or LAN games?,
  • where to download movies from- rapidshare or megashare?,
  • which movie to watch? - One playing in my room or at the neighbors?
  • when to copy assignments - now or in tomorrows class?
  • and in the morning's, when I wake up to foot steps of neighbors' going to college - "ok, i cant anyway make it to the first lecture, second or the third lecture?I guess the third lecture is cancelled today, gr8 i can directly go the 4th lecture"
A lot of options, so many options we are spoilt for chance! :)

Shift to Pune, I was working at Accenture,
Like it is every other time, initial days were great!,
After im into a project, and a few days into it, i was sleeping late and waking up early - and that too voluntarily. (not as it was in in 11th and 12th grades - where a person would be employed to wake people up in the morning)
I would want to sleep for more duration in the morning, but my body wouldn't accept  just as a project manager  wouldn't accept to pay for work on weekends when projects' out of budget!
I was getting heck of this work and my restless-ness on the other hand and happened to admit  this stuff to my colleague which he attributed to "fresher syndrome" - taking too much burden of office work, and he suggested to show the finger next time some one asks to work on weekend/stretch working hours without extra allowance. With a decent GRE score, and the confidence of getting an admit in one or other university for masters - i showed not one, but two fingers(of-course with both the hands!) and my bed time of 8hrs-9hrs was restored.
Couple of months later, Recession et all and , fear of not getting an admit starts and firing in Accenture also starts, which lead to stretching working hours on weekends  too and ultimately my sleep quota was badly hurt.

Finally,
Into a University for Masters Degree,
and with only 3 modules for my first semester,
and just  when i feel things are moving at right pace,
when i have all the time on the planet to sleep - peacefully,
without fear of someone picking me up for sleeping,
and not  having to wake up to go jogging or to study or to go to work.
I don't understand where all my hunger for sleep has gone and why the fish don't i get some sleep :(

Been quite some time since I've posted!
Quite a lot of updates from my side(to be posted though!) and you'll be hearing from me quite often.

For Now,

I heard of people who have their favorite porn stars, just like every ordinary person has their fav Holly/Bolly/Tolly wood stars and love to watch their movies.
One fine day, I happened to view this profile in twitter.

I knew people had their fav porn stars as well,
But never in my wildest dreams, i thought they would follow their star so much, that they could reminded their start that he/she hasn't done a particular genre yet!

I am ....

Sometimes it's funny to know what others think of us.

During my initial days at Pune,

One day, on my way to pool room, a person arbitrarily looked at me and asked "Telugu ah?!"."Avunu, How did you guess?" was my reply and he said-"I was able to make out!".

Some other day, I along with a friend was returning to room from friend's place and we lost our way.We were asking people for directions in Hindi and One guy asked at the end of our conversation "Karnataka se,kya?"

At office, one day while in a chit-chat session one of my colleagues' came to know that i eat meat,He asked "Venkat?!, You are a non-vegetarian?"."Yup, What's so strange in that?!" I replied."What man?, you are venkata satyanarayana murthy aren't you a tamil brahmin?"

I'm a Telugu by face, Kannadiga by my hindi i speak and a Tamilian by name!!

A Good Day!

Perhaps, the best day i had till date this year!!

-Got an e-mail conforming an admit in NUS.
-My previous manager called up, asking if i would like to work with him and there is an onsite chance for the new project.
-Lunch at office cafeteria was eatable.
